Learning Cake

I turned the leftover cake to my daughter to have fun with. We mixed up an interesting color of frosting and she decided to put the alphabet and numbers on it. She decided it was a learning cake and would be good to teach her brother these things. I love letting her have a go at cakes, she gets such joy from decorating them and it is good quality time together.

Spaghetti Cake

For April Fool's day I like to make an interesting meal for my family. This year I went with spaghetti and meatballs. Only it only looked like spaghetti and meatballs. It was really cake. My daughter thought I had put frosting on spaghetti noodles. The meatballs are actually cake balls. I offered some to my niece the next day and she was like, "no thanks." She quickly changed her tune when I assured her it was frosting not pasta! It was fun to do.

Orca Cake

Once again I had leftover cakes to do something with. I let Trinity have a go with it. I had blue frosting so we decided to do an ocean cake. I made an Orca and then Trinity and I made fish for it.

Pink and Brown Cake

Since I made 2 cakes, I had two leftover ones to decorate. Trinity once again was given charge of this cake. She told me what colors to frost it, which I did. She also did a drawing of what she wanted it to look like. Well, I had it frosted and waiting. However it took longer to do the Orca cake and I was already exhausted after doing 2 other cakes, so I decide to just go ahead and finish the cake. I thought it turned out cute though. Simple but cute.

Dinosaur

I had a cake that needed frosted and decorated. I implored my 5 year old daughter to help. We made it a dinosaur theme. I frosted, she decorated. In case you didn't know, for a 5 year old, they kind of have an "all in" attitude. So here is her cake, covered in every dinosaur we have! I think she did great with it though. She even took the dinosaurs and put footprints in the mud. She did a great job.

Spring Garden

I had some frosting that needed to be used so: I had to make a cake! My 5 year old daughter of course wanted to help me. So we mixed up a cake then baked it. I quickly cooled it (thank you freezer) and frosted it, 5 year olds are not patient (plus it was bed time)! While it was cooling she cut out some fondant flowers. Then after it was frosted she put them on, all over! It has a few too many flowers for my taste, but it is her cake so I had to let her do it. It was very pretty and tasted great!

April's Fool

My daughter learned all about April Fool's day in preschool. Since she understood it, I decided to play my own little joke on her. This is what I made her for dinner. Grilled cheese sandwiches, cupcakes and Juice. She was excited to have cupcakes. And juice is not a common thing in our house, so that too excited her. This is where the joke came in: It was not juice; it was jello. It was not grilled cheese; it was angel food cake, toasted with frosting I colored orange. It was not cupcakes; it was meatloaf with mashed potato frosting! It was a fun joke and a tatsy dinner. I don't think I ever told my daughter before she had to eat her cupcake before she got her sandwich!

Cake Contest

So a website that makes t-shirts, Threadless, had a cake contest. You make a cake based on one of their t-shirt designs. Well, I decided to go ahead and do it. Knowing it would all just be for fun. I debated and debated and finally decided to do it. My cake is very amature compared to some, and definitely will not be winning, but it was still fun to make it. Actually, I picked a stressful time to decide to do it. Over all I was happy with the outcome. I thought it was a decent looking cake. Oh the flaws it had, but if you glance at it and don't look too hard, it is passable for cute. I hesitated to enter it because there were so many that were a TON better, but figured I had spent the time making it, I might as well submit it. Here is the link to the cake I made for the threadcakes contest. Shirt it is based on.
